How To Trace A Mobile Number Current Location Free?

My laptop was stolen. Someone told me it is possible to trace the IP address of its current location if connected to the Internet by using the serial number. Is this true and how would one go about doing this?

    Purely theoretically, you could try to trace the MAC address of the ethernet adapter if you had it written down somewhere. The only way that would work, though, is if you are on the same LAN as the laptop. Even then, you'd have to have access to the network switch's software and some scary hacking skills to trace its physical location. I suppose it's possible the Internet Service Provider could trace a computer by its MAC address, but I doubt that they'd be willing to do that without a court order--too many privacy issues.

The only way (that I know of) to do this is if there is something identifiable (software) running on your laptop that can be identified via the internet. Some products exist that are installed on a laptop (before they are stolen) just for that purpose. As soon as the thief connects to the internet, the company who made the trace software can trace the machine to an ISP and from there, the authorities can go after and try to nab the thief. Unfortunately, once the hard drive is modified in such a way as to erase the trace software, it's over. Aside from official trace software, many programs can be identified by their serial number etc., but getting that traced involves the cooperation of both the software vendor, the ISP and the authorities. I know this is putting you on the spot, but many others could learn from your experience if you would share with us how your laptop got stolen. How did it happen?
