Why is my PC only showing a black screen?

My HP pc running Vista is showing a black screen when I try and boot it up. The fans are running and the windows logo sound can be heard when I first turn it on. The light on the front turns to orange when I move the mouse, but no login screen shows up.

I am dealing with exactly that same problem right now! My HP Pavilion is only 5 months old so I'm taking in for service today hoping it's still under warranty. I have a newer laptop (5 months) - HP Pavilion. The screen froze, couldn't move the cursor, etc. I turned the laptop off with the power button (no other choice). It powers back up with indicator lights but the screen stays black. Also, wireless toggle stays orange. I didn't want Vista, but it's hard to find a new computer that offers XP. Any other suggestions from anyone?
