Administrative clerk for a restaurant?

I work at a hotel with a restaurant attatched. My boss wants me (front desk clerk) to call guests in there rooms to tell them that dinner is served at 5pm. And call every hour if we don't get a hold of them. I think it's invasive and stupid. Opinions?

  • Answer:

Yes it is invasive. Why not just print out fliers and stick them under the door?

Well if I was at your hotel, I'd book a different one next time. Do I have stupid written on my forehead? Do I not know how to find dinner when I feel like eating? Every time the phone rings, I worry that maybe something is wrong at home, or maybe I'm having a nap because I traveled all day and I'm tired, and now you're waking me up. If you want to increase business in the restaurant, do it some other way. He is trying to promote restaurant business, by a wrong method, and in doing so, he is damaging the business as a whole. He will suffer greater losses in the bigger picture.

I agree with you that it is stupid and invasive. Tell people when they check in what time dinner is, and let them figure it out for themselves. It's not that hard. They may want to eat out. They may want to eat in their rooms. They may want to sleep or not be disturbed. If a hotel called me every hour, I'd raise holy hell. It would be the LAST time I stayed at that place, too, and I'd make sure to tell my friends about it. Sorry you have a dopey boss. Your guests should feel like guests in your hotel; not prisoners who have to show up when the bell rings. Foolish!

Your boss is obviously getting a kickback from the restaurant. Yes it is stupid and invasive. Unfortunately you will get the brunt of the abuse from irritated patrons. Like another answer stated, hand out fliers as they check in and let them make up there own minds as to whether they want to eat at your restaurant or not. Many times when I am in a hotel I never eat at the restaurant usually due to high prices and/or low quality food. I prefer to dine at a restaurant I am familiar with and there is usually one within range of where I'm staying that I will go to outside the hotel. I am only at your establishment to shower, change clothes, and sleep. Perhaps I may visit your pool or jacuzzi but other than that leave me alone. I have the utmost respect and sympathy for the cleaning staff and the front desk. I know you have an under-appreciated job and are paid very little for it so I treat the "working people" with respect and greet you with a smile and a good attitude. In addition I always leave a tip for the cleaning staff regardless of how long I stay. My best wishes to you and thanks for the job you do.
