What are some writing tips for young writers?

Have you taken a course at college on writing/english? Do you have any tips or class notes you can share with Answerbag writers wanting to improve their craft? The more info, the better! Thanks! :)

  • Answer:

English 3200 by Blumenthal is probably the most interestingly helpful & organized approach to writing english I've ever seen. Its an old book & I hope its not out of print.

I have taken myriad courses. I majored in Rhetoric and English Literature, and have an M.A. in English as a Second Language. I taught both ESL and writing for 13 years. In Oklahoma is was a professor. SO. . .learn when and where to use /. Where you have it in your question would be marked, and marked as woeful. The big tip here is to study grammar till you know it. It isn't hard, but it does take dedication. It's also a really good idea to use your dictionary, not only for words you don't know, but for words you THINK you know. It isn't a waste of time to look up a word you know to verify your knowledge. Also, check the pronunciation. "Gala" is pronounced 'gay-la' not 'gal-a'. "Ribald" is pronounced 'rye-bald' not 'ribbled'. And "ogle" is pronounced 'oh-gul' not 'au-gul'. And just for fun, look up victual. You'll get a kick out of it.
