What is a deco?

What exactly is art deco?

  • I think I recognize it on some older furniture and buildings ive seen, and even a few cars I know of, but what is the definition of it? What dictates something as art deco? Im finding that I like anything labeled as that. Im a very visual person, I look at objects rather than where I should be most (if not all) of the time, and im trying to just explore my tastes a little more. I have a feeling that it was from the 1930s or 40's. What in particular is a very good representation of it? Or, what is your favorite example of it? If you know of anything. Also, why was it called art deco?

  • Answer:

I am a big fan of art deco. It is called this because, while being fully functional, its emphasis was on aesthetics. My all time favorite art deco artist was the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He also did glassworks and woodworking, not associated with his architecture.

Great question to understand what art deco is,it helps to know how it came about. Others have answered concerning the name itself and how it came about, so I will not go into that. The late 18th, early 20th century saw the rise of the "Industrial age". this was a time in design that only payed attention to function, if it wasn't needed, it was useless. Design lacked style and detail. This gave birth to " Art nouveau", which was in reaction to the boring design of the industrial age. Art nouveau incorporated curving shapes, figures and art on design. Art deco was a modern interpretation of art nouveau that used geometric shapes, curves became chevrons. As arisztid said, many of frank Lloyd wrights designs were in the art deco motiff's. He is also my favorite

I'm sorry to resort to Wiki for the info: "After the Universal Exposition of 1900, various French artists formed an informal collective known as, La Société des artistes décorateurs (the society of the decorator artists).[5] Founders included Hector Guimard, Eugène Grasset, Raoul Lachenal, Paul Bellot, Maurice Dufrêne, and Emile Decoeur. These artists heavily influenced the principles of Art Deco as a whole. This society's purpose was to demonstrate internationally the leading position and evolution of the French decorative arts. They organized the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art) in Paris, which would feature French art and business interests. The terms Style Moderne and Art Deco both derive from the exposition's title, though Art Deco was not widely used until popularized by art historian Bevis Hillier's 1968 book Art Deco of the 20s and 30s." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Deco One of its representatives I like the most, although not in a "traditional" Art Deco and more of an Art Noveau sense is Mackintosh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rennie_Mackintosh More Info can be found here as well: http://www.antique-marks.com/art-deco-artists.html
