How difficult is Neuroscience as an undergraduate major?

Are there many jobs in neuroscience? How difficult is the subject(relative to...)? And, what specific careers are available?

  • I'm considering majoring in neuroscience for college to help me get a career, but considering the college I'm attending (less prestigious than the only other college offering the major in my state), I would to not get hired simply because of that (in other words, is a career in this field that competitive, if at all)? Also, how hard is it (not very, somewhat, a lot)? It could help if you compare it to something many people find difficult or easy. I have a general idea of what careers there are, but anything specifically different or strange would be great to know about. Thanks in advance. :D

  • Answer:

Neuroscience is a very broad discipline. With a bachelors degree in neuroscience you could apply for quite a few different jobs post-college, anything from advertising to research work depending upon your emphasis during college. If you decide to continue your education following the degree, you could go on to medical school for an MD (very competitive to get in to med school) and practice medicine and/or do research. Medical doctors are needed almost everywhere, so getting a job post-MD would not be prohibitively difficult. You could also go to graduate school for a PhD, which is much less competitive to get into, but leads to a bottleneck when trying to be hired as a PhD graduate. Post PhD jobs are extremely competitive, with 200-400 applicants per 1 opening not uncommon.
