How to be a millionaire?

A millionaire with $250 cash in his pocket tries to use a credit card he found to buy $40 worth of pizza. How should he be punished?

  • (Newser) – So a millionaire dentist stumbles across some student's lost credit card in a parking lot, and promptly goes inside the store to ... charge $40 worth of pizza? That's the sad-sack story of Richard Ludwig, according to Florida cops, who found him inside Mia Pizza Pasta Kitchen waiting on two pies with extra olives, reports the Orlando Sentinel. When Harrun Majeed, a Florida college student and veteran, called to cancel his card, he was told there had already been a charge made—from the same plaza where he dropped it. Majeed called cops, who found Ludwig with $250 in cash on him. The Michigan dentist, in town for his own son's college baseball game, admitted to using the found credit card to pay for the pizzas, though not for lack of funds: When police asked if he was having financial problems he reportedly laughed and estimated his net worth at between $3 million and $4 million. http://www.newser.com/story/113557/richard-ludwig-millionaire-dentist-finds-students-lost-credit-card-charges-pizza.html

  • Answer:

Maybe he should be forced to make a deal with the pizza place and pay them to award the student a lifetime free pizza card. You can never have too much pizza, in my opinion ;)

It is a ridiculous thing for that guy to do .. but the law is supposed to blind to anything but the facts of the case. He should get whatever punishment the law provides for. Hopefully, the bad press he's getting will hurt him if he loses patients/income from this. His reputation certainly has to be damaged badly by this.

I'm not exactly sure how we could apply it here, but in Finland they explicitly recognize that the $XXX fine for a traffic violation is not enough to deter a millionaire from violating the traffic laws. Hence, they make the violation fine proportional to ones income. This can turn into some real money if you're wealthy: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2004-02-11-finn-speeding-ticket_x.htm Perhaps we should generalize that principle for all sorts of crimes against property.

He should be punished the same as someone with no cash in their pocket. Theft is theft.

How do you think people get so rich. Cheating. Stepping on others. When they get caught, they laugh. They have enough money to get out of any situation.

worthless piece of nothingness

Everything he owns should be seized. His assets should be divided up into one time college scolarships, one of which should be granted to the person whose card he used, and his dentistry license should be revoked.

Temporary Name

The same way a poor person would be punished.

Self Consuming Cannibal

Fine him a million dollars and make him pay restitution with the student for the 40 dollars he stole.

Charlie is a girl

Like any other thief. He may not have stolen the card but using it is still theft. Just because he is stinking rich changes nothing. It highlights that he is cheap and dishonorable. A poor person would simply be dishonorable! Happy Monday Wynper! :)
