  First you have to understand that a pawnshop is a business and they exist to make money. A pawn broker will generally try to offer you no more than around 1/3 of what he thinks he can sell it for. If your haggling skills are up to snuff, you may be able to work this up to around 1/2, depending on the broker, the state you're in and the actual value of the item you're selling. Neat items that draw shoppers can fetch a little higher percentage simply because it benefits the pawnshop simply be being on the shelf. So as a very general rule, if you've got a ruby that would normally sell on the market for around $100, plan on being offered anywhere between $10 and $30 to start the bidding. You may be able to haggle that up to $40 - $50 on a good day, but don't bet the farm on it. Pawnshops tend to like small, valuable items because they don't take up much room and are generally easy to sell... but it also depends on how much similar stuff they already have in stock. If the owner has boxes of gems and stones in the back that no one is buying, he probably won't offer you anything at all. The best advice would be to take them to a pawnshop and just ask them... "how much will you give me for these?"
