How to decrease and increase the concentration of a solution?

If acid is added to a solution does OH- concentration increase or decrease?

  • Answer:

-OH, or hydroxide, concentrations decrease as an acidic compound is added to it. This is because of a process known as dissociation, or the transfer of hydrogen atoms (or protons) The result is that the acidic compound becomes less acidic because it donates protons to the hydroxide anions, and as it does it becomes more neutral (pH of water = 7, neutral). Also as the hydroxide anions receive the hydrogen atoms, the result is the formation of water (H + OH = H2O), and the water molecule is released from the previously basic compound. The overall result is, in an equal concentration of acid to base, both compounds form as close to a neutral compound (pH = 7) as possible.
