Why is my computer not connecting with my printer?

What allows you to connect a monitor and a printer to a notebook computer via one connection as opposed to connecting individual devices?

  • Answer:

The original idea for the Universal Serial Bus or USB was that you would be able to "daisy-chain" devices one to another. This worked, until device manufacturers realized that they could draw power from the USB circuit to power the device. You can't daisy-chain devices and still draw power from them. An earlier version of the same concept, the Small Computer System Interface or SCSI would (in theory!) allow you to daisy-chain no more than 7 devices together. But the devices were only compatible in theory, and the configuration was sometimes a bit tricky. This also required you to manually set a unique identifier for each device.
