Why does my browser keep redirecting me?

How to Keep My Browser From Redirecting

  • Answer:

Browser redirects are a common symptom of OpenDNS -- an intelligent, free domain name system (DNS) resolution service that's faster, safer and more reliable than standard, Internet service provider-based DNS services. The problem with OpenDNS, however, is that it automatically redirects all Google search requests entered through Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer's integrated address bars to the OpenDNS Guide search engine. To keep your browser from redirecting, adjust Firefox configuration settings or your operating system's registery, depending on your browser of choice. Difficulty: Moderately Challenging Instructions Firefox Fix Open Firefox, type "about:config" in the URL address bar, hit enter and then click on the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button that appears in the middle of your screen. Type the phrase "keyword.URL" in the box labeled "Filter" and hit enter. It'll be near the top of your screen. Double click on "keyword.URL," which will appear underneath the "Preference Name" field, which is right underneath the "Filter" box. Type "http://www.google.com/search?q=" in textbox that appears on your screen, and then hit the "OK" button. From now on, any search you submit through the address bar in Firefox will be directed to the Google search engine. Internet Explorer Fix Access the registry editor by clicking on the "Start" menu, selecting the "Run" option, typing "regedit" in the textbox that appears on your screen and hitting enter. Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes" by clicking the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder, the "Software" folder, the "Microsoft" folder, the Internet Explorer folder and the "SearchScopes" folder. These folders will be visible on the left side of the registry editor interface. Click on the value {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A}. It'll appear underneath and slightly to the right of the "SearchScopes" folder. Click "URL." It'll be on the right side of the registry editor interface underneath the "Name" field. Type "http://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}" in the textbox that appears and then click the "OK" button. From now on, any search you submit through the address bar in Google will be directed to the Google search engine.
