How do I find out who owns a email address?

How to Find Out Who Owns an Email Address Using the Header

  • Answer:

When an email message arrives in your inbox, the sender's display name or email address will appear in the "From" column when viewed in your mail application. Some people may deliberately delete this information from outgoing email in an attempt to remain anonymous; but more often, it is simply an oversight by a user who did not set up his email software correctly. If the sender's display name doesn't appear, you can find out who sent you the message by viewing the "header" that displays when you choose to reply to the message. Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions Log in to your email account. Scroll through the messages in your inbox until you find the one with a missing display name or email address in the "From" column. Click on the message subject and then click the "Reply" button, just as you would to reply to the message. Hover your mouse over the header in the editable field that appears. The name displayed next to the address in the "From:" field reflects the owner of the email address -- or, at least, the name by which the sender has chosen to identify himself.
