  When an email message arrives in your inbox, the sender's display name or email address will appear in the "From" column when viewed in your mail application. Some people may deliberately delete this information from outgoing email in an attempt to remain anonymous; but more often, it is simply an oversight by a user who did not set up his email software correctly. If the sender's display name doesn't appear, you can find out who sent you the message by viewing the "header" that displays when you choose to reply to the message.
