By using this feature, you can talk to other Gmail users in real time through the use of text-based messages. Emoticons, commonly referred to as "smileys," are symbols that can enhance instant messages and provide a laugh for friends you are chatting with. Difficulty: Easy Instructions Open a Gmail Chat window by logging into your Gmail inbox and clicking a contact that is currently logged in to their Gmail account. Click on the smiley icon at the bottom of the chat window, and click on one of the faces to have that face appear in the chat window. You can also use keyboard commands to input smiley faces.
