How to recover address book?

How Do I Recover an Outlook Address Book?

  • Answer:

Microsoft Outlook saves your address book's contacts to .PST, an Outlook data file. An Outlook data file contains your personal folders, such as email messages, appointments and notes. If MS Outlook crashes while the PST file is open, it can end up corrupting data in the file. If you created a backup of the PST file, you can import the data file into Outlook and quickly recover your address book. If you don't have a backup available, however, you can instead use Microsoft Outlook's Inbox Repair Tool to fix the corrupted file. Difficulty: Easy Instructions Using the Inbox Repair Tool Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Type "options" into the search box, and then press "Enter." Choose "Folder Options" from the results. Click the "View" tab. Under "Hidden Files and Folders," select "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives." Click "OK." Type "Mail" into the search box. Press "Enter," then select "Mail" from the search results. Click the "Data Files" button. Choose your Outlook data file from the list. Click "Settings." Highlight the full file path in the "Filename" field. Hold down "Ctrl" and "C" to copy the location. Click "Start." Click "Computer." Select a blank space on the address bar. Type "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14." Press "Enter" to go to the folder. Select "Name" from the sorting options in the right pane to alphabetize the files in the folder. Find "scanpst.exe." Double-click the file to open the "Inbox Repair Tool." Highlight the "Enter the Name of the File You Want to Scan" field. Hold down "Ctrl" and "V" to paste the location of the PST file. Click "Start" to scan the file for errors. If the Inbox Repair Tool detects errors in the file, click "Repair." The Inbox Repair Tool will recover the items and create a backup file. Open Microsoft Outlook. Click the "Home" tab, click "Items," point to "More Items." Click "Outlook Data File." Enter a name for the file. Click "OK." Hold down "Ctrl" and "6" to open the folder list. Click "Lost and Found" or "Recovered Personal Folders." Drag and drop the items to the new Outlook data file to restore the address book. Using an Existing Backup Open Microsoft Outlook. Hold down "Ctrl" and "6" and click your "Contacts" folder. Select "File" from the ribbon menu. Choose "Open" from the left pane. Choose "Import" from the right pane to open the Import and Export Wizard. Choose "Import from another program or file" from the list. Click "Next." Click "Outlook Data File (.PST)" on the "Select File Type to Import From" window. Click "Next." Click "Browse." Go to the folder where the backup PST file is saved. Choose how Outlook should handle duplicate contacts. Click "Next." Enter the password if prompted. Click "OK." Select "Contacts" from "Outlook Data File." Select the radio button next to "Import items into the current folder." Click "Finish" to recover the Microsoft Outlook address book.
