Why were the nobles adamant that the people of England should be givien basic rights during the middle ages?

Answer:
The English barons insisted on a document of rights, because they wanted guarantees of their own rights and the rights of their family members. They did not draw a line at the barons, because most of their family members were not barons and never would be. In fact it turns out not to be easy to draw a line between high and low or rich and poor. It is not easy to guarantee the rights of knights without guaranteeing the rights of lords of manors who were not knights. It is not easy to guarantee the rights of ordinary lords of manors without also guaranteeing the rights of yeomen. And so forth. Fortunately, while it would have been difficult to do this, on the one hand, there was no particular reason to do it, on the other.
