Distance Learning Tips for Students

Answer:
Many college students are taking online courses now. The Sloan Consortium reports that almost 30 percent of college students were taking at least one class online as of 2009. It may seem easier to take courses online instead of in the classroom, but there are still challenges that go along with taking classes on the Internet. Students have to be more responsible and keep up with their assignments and tests on their own. Internet Access It is not required for you to have Internet access at home, but you must be able to use a computer with Internet access regularly. Many classes taught online have assignments that are due every week and there are frequent online discussions that you are required to participate in. If you don't own a computer with reliable Internet access, try using the computers at your college. Time Investment Many students think they will have to do a lot less work than they would in their regular classes. Classes taught online can take up as much time as classes taught in a classroom. Prairie State College states that students should dedicate nine hours a week of studying for each online class. Set up a schedule for each online class you take. For example, you can decide to devote three hours a day to one online course three days a week. Getting Help Do not hesitate to ask your professor questions. Even though you do not see him every week, he is still available to help you. Most professors will provide students with their email addresses and phone numbers. It may be helpful to build a relationship with your professor in the beginning by introducing yourself. He will know that you are taking the class seriously and will go out of his way to help you. Reaching Out Make a connection with the other students who are taking the same online classes you are. Use the discussion board to ask your classmates questions about any material that you do not understand. Also, trade cell phone numbers and get together for study group sessions.
