Sony Vaio won't boot up can anyone help please?

(Sounds like battery is bad. When they get real bad they will drain the AC Adapter and might not power up at all) So i don't use this laptop anymore due to the graphics card being broken in it. However the other week i went to turn it on and i got a power light and the battery light come on. Nothing else, when i press the power button on the laptop the orange battery light goes out, and comes back on when the button is depressed. I decided to leave it on charge and I've noticed that the laptop has to be fully charged and plugged in to power up. But surely this shouldn't be the case. Can anyone help me please. Its a Sony Vaio VGN-S2XP Its Running Windows 7 RC -512MB RAM (I thought this might be the problem) 80GB HDD Graphics card gives BSD when enabled. Please help
