How to Figure your Semester Grade in School

Answer:
Keeping track of your semester grade is a valuable tool for success in college. If you find your grade is not what it should be, you can determine what you need to do to bring your grade up. Calculating your semester grade involves averaging all tests, assignments, quizzes, homework and class participation into a final grade. Find out from your teacher the percentage value assigned for each component. As the semester progresses, keep a log of all your grades to calculate an accurate semester score. Difficulty: Easy Things You'll Need Log of semester grades Calculator Instructions Total your quiz scores. Divide the total score by the number of quizzes. For example, if you had five quizzes during the semester and received grades of 95, 85, 70, 100 and 80, the total for the grades would equal 430. Divide 430 by the total number of quizzes. In this case the average score of the five quizzes is 86. Multiply the average score by the percentage value your teacher has assigned for quizzes. If it is 20 percent, then you would multiply 86 by .20, giving you a score of 17.2. Most teachers round off numbers, so your semester score would be 17 for quizzes. Add your test scores for the semester, then divide the total score by the number of tests you took. If you took two tests during the semester and each test is worth 25 percent of your grade, you would add the two test scores, divide them by two and multiply by .25 to arrive at your final test grade. For example, adding test scores of 95 and 80 equals 175. That total divided by two equals 87.5; multiplying by .25 equals 21.8. The final semester grade would be rounded up to 22. Add the grades for all projects, such as book reports, presentations or group projects. Divide the total grade by the number of projects completed to calculate the semester average. Follow the formula in the first two steps to arrive at a final semester grade for projects and assignments. Add the grades for homework assignments completed during the semester. Remember to add a zero for any missed assignments because they still count in the average semester grade. Divide the total score for homework assignments by the total number assigned during the semester for your average grade. Follow the percentage calculation formula to get your final grade. Ask the teacher how class participation is factored into semester grades. Multiply the grade by the percentage value your teacher uses. If you participate in class discussions regularly, this grade should not be a problem. Add the grades you calculated for quizzes, tests, projects, homework and class participation. The result is your overall semester grade average. Tips & Warnings Tip: If your semester grade average is not as high as you anticipated, ask your teacher for an extra credit assignment. Most teachers are willing to help students improve their averages if the student is willing to do extra work. Tip: Keep track of your grade averages to help you stay motivated to turn in assignments on time, study for tests and to keep from falling behind in your classwork.
