Can I substitute powdered pectin for liquid?

Can you substitute jello for pectin when making jam?

  • I make fresh fruit jam using pectin. I have often wondered if I could use jello instead of pectin.

  • Answer:

You sure can use Jello instead of pectin, but the recipe changes a bit. My grandma always used Jello to make jam. Here's her recipe: 3 cups fruit pulp, 3 cups sugar, 6 oz. pkg Jello powder (any flavor, but try to match the flavor with the fruit, such as strawberry banana Jello with strawberries, etc.). Stir everything together in a large pan and bring to a boil over medium/med high heat, stirring constantly. Boil for 3 minutes. Skim the foam off and ladle into hot clean jars. Process in boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
