Tips on Making a Poster Board on Writing

Answer:
Writing is an essential skill for students to master; as an educator, you know that. However, it is often a challenge to keep students interested in the writing process. You want them to grasp and enjoy the art of writing, and a poster board can be a useful visual tool in helping your students to do this. Before creating the poster board, choose the specific writing skill you will focus on. Introduce the Skill At the top of the poster board, introduce the writing skill. This should be eye-catching for the student and can be accomplished through a brightly lettered title such as "Brainstorming" or "Genre." Underneath or next to the title, depending upon available space, list a brief definition of the skill. Model the Skill Under the title portion of the poster board, present examples of the skill in action. Pictures are most effective in this section, for example, if the poster board is on brainstorming, include pictures of brainstorm techniques. If the poster board is on genre, present pictures of familiar texts and state the texts' genre. This section of the poster board will help students visualize the skill. Guide Students Through the Skill The middle and main section of the poster board should teach students how to master the skill themselves. Present a brief exercise for students to complete. "The Most Wonderful Writing Lessons Ever" suggests the following exercise for teaching students to add detail to their writing: Choose a familiar item and instruct the students to describe the color, size, material, age, texture, condition, shape and weight of the item. Apply the Skill Now that the students have been introduced to the skill, and they have practiced the skill, the final section of the poster board should ask students to apply the skill to a writing assignment. If the class is working on a larger assignment, attempt to connect the skill to that assignment specifically. If there is not an assignment of this type available, design an assignment that requires students to exhibit their knowledge of the skill and to use it in their own writing.
