What genre is this defined as?

Shakespeare's protagonists are less rigidly defined than Greek protagonists and Shakespeares also make use of comic elements unlike the Greeks About which genre of writing is the statement above true?

  • Answer:

Well to start with, your question is badly phrased so im not entirely sure what you mean... well it might be phrased fine but i don't understand but i shall try and answer and avoid my Shakespeare essay :) I think Shakespeare's protagonists are only slightly less rigidly defined than perhaps Greek ones but i haven't read a lot of Greek or Shakespeare plays. I think Greek plots are quite easy and predictable, they generally follow the pattern of the era they were written in where as some Shakey ones are a bit more unpredictable and this may effect your view of the protagonist. Othello does however follow the Greek protagonist pattern, he is noble and comes from royal decent and one of his tragic flaws is Hubris (pride) which leads to his downfall. Also in this play the character of Iago acts as the Gods, he creates the situations which help lead Othello to his demise. For the second statement im a bit confused because the Greeks did write comdies... It was the third play that was performed in the Dionysian festival thingy i think ... there were four plays, three of which were tragedies and one comedy i think...not sure you may have to check that... I hope this helps ish... not sure it will, but thank-you for the slight break from the essay :) x
