What is the best pillow for back pain?

What is the best pillow to prevent neck pain?

  • I sleep on my back and tilt my head to one side (both left or right). I wake up with muscle soreness / stiffness in the right side of the neck / trap area. I have tried many types of pillows: tempurpedic neck pillow, tempurpedic symphony pillow, small pillows, large pillows, Japanese memory foam pillow with magnets, Costco brand half down/half memory foam pillow. All have not helped. I wake up every morning with stiffness and am constantly stretching the stiff muscle area (the right side of my neck/trap area). I go to a soft touch chiropractor, get monthly massages, do yoga and workout. I believe it is my pillow that is causing this pain... Please help, thanks!

  • Answer:

I was looking for a pillow a while back as I had problems with neck pain and stiff neck during the night. I find feather pillows too flat and often woke up with stiff neck in the morning. I'm susceptible to headaches anyway so sleeping on feather pillows didn't help. I found a site with those S shaped pillows made of memory foam and tried it out and I find it very good as my neck is better supported. http://orthopedic-pillow.co.uk

I like the cervical traction neck pillow. This pillow will work especially well for this case also because the "V" shape will help to hold the head straight: http://www.neckpainreliefkit.com/tractionpillow This is a pillow commonly recommended by chiropractors for neck alignment and to help hold the neck adjustment better.
