4th Grade Vocabulary Activities

  • Answer:

Students in fourth grade begin to build an extensive vocabulary they will use the rest of their school career. Basic vocabulary skills improve their ability to read and write more effectively. At this level they are learning how to use root words, prefixes, suffixes and context clues. They are acquiring the skills needed to analyze unfamiliar words used in and out of context. Stimulating activities assist students with learning and understanding new vocabulary words and their meanings. Illustrated Vocabulary Book An illustrated vocabulary book gives students an opportunity to memorize new vocabulary words and be creative at the same time. Provide a blank booklet for each student and instruct him to write one of the vocabulary words at the top of each page and illustrate it with a picture. For example, with the word "desert" the student must use his knowledge of the word to create an illustration that represents it. You can use the booklets for one lesson or keep adding more vocabulary words from later lessons. Pass The Dictionary This activity gives students practice at looking up words in the dictionary. Begin by having one of the students find and pronounce a random word in the dictionary then ask the other students to write down their definition on a strip of paper. The first student then collects the papers and reads all of the definitions. The students must decide which definition is the correct one. The dictionary is then passed to the student who came up with the correct definition, and the game continues. Build Vocabulary With Adjectives Read the book "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister aloud to the class, emphasizing adjectives used to describe nouns, then leave the adjectives out on the second reading. Have a class discussion about how adjectives helped give meaning to the nouns. Play an adjective game after all the students understand the use and meaning of adjectives. Have the students sit on their desks and toss a beach ball around. The one who catches it must say an adjective and pass the ball to another student. If a student cannot think of an adjective quickly, she must sit down in her chair. The winner is the one left sitting on the desk. Vocabulary Bingo This bingo game helps students review vocabulary and allows teachers to assess the students' knowledge at the same time. Students draw a 4x4 grid on paper and then write vocabulary words in the boxes. Pass out plastic chips to mark the cards then read off a definition of each vocabulary word. When they recognize a vocabulary word, the students will fill up the corresponding box. When a student has four words across, horizontally or diagonally, he can call out "Bingo!" If all the words correctly match the definitions, that student wins and gets a small prize. Vocabulary Charades This vocabulary game reviews and reinforces previous vocabulary words. A student chooses a vocabulary word from the word wall to act out. The student actor calls on another student to identify the word being acted out. If the student called on can identify the word, define it and use it correctly in a sentence, she is the next person to act out another word. This interactive review activity helps reinforce vocabulary concepts in a fun way.
