  This is an old question, but I just had the same situation with my garage door. Replacing the springs is a dangerous job. It can be done by the homeowner but it requires careful execution because of the potential for catastrophic injuries. It could be possible to just replace one spring, but it would be imprudent since the springs probably have the same age and if one fails, the other is sure to fail around the same time. You can order the springs on line if you can determine the size of the existing springs and the door size and weight. The doors can weight several hundred pounds. My door weights 200 lbs and the springs for it cost over $90 shipped. I got 20 year life springs. I paid a friend to do the job as he has experience with it. I helped him to do it. Between dismantling the mechanism, ordering the springs and putting it all back together, it took about 4 days. If the springs had been readily available, it could all be done in half a day if the person doing it is very handy with tools and pretty strong, and you have all the tools you need. I don't think this is a job for just anybody although many people would be quite capable of doing it. It cost me about $225 in parts and labor.
