Does it irritate you when people say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas? Explain your answer.

I feel it is completely annoying when people say happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Christmas is the name of the holiday and I intend to keep saying Merry Christmas, until they officially change the name of from Christmas to Holiday. I really can't understand how it would offend someone of a different religion than Christianity. All religions I've ever heard of teach in understanding, and being accepting of those who are of different religion, race, or sex. I think if you're that easily offended when someone says Merry Christmas than you will find a reason to get offended off anything, and that's just not a healthy way to live.

Answer:
i am 42 years old, and since i was born all i can remember is Merry Christmas. America is about Christmas. The reason they have Black Friday is because people are buying gifts because of Christmas. America is becoming a weak. Who care where you are from, if you have a different religion or are from another country and decide to come to this country, then you have to assimilate to this country, USA. Christmas is not about religion, its about a time in the month of December when people are more giving and cheerful. No one give a crap about all those other "so called holidays". those holidays come and go, and no one cares. This is America and its always been about Merry Christmas. Lets get some balls America and say Merry Christmas. I refuse to say Merry Christmas, not for religious reasons, but because i remember what Santa Clause represents, what the cartoons during Christmas mean, rudolph, santa, and all the lights and Christmas trees. What should we stop selling Christmas trees now? Get a grip people, this is not about religious tradition, this is about AMERICAN!!! TRADITION.

I first noticed the reference of CHRISTMAS being called "the holiday",a few years ago.I honestly thought I was hearing things, and people were just kinda joking about it.The home shopping channels, particularly qvc, never use the word "CHRISTMAS" anymore. The other day,one of the hosts' used the term "holiday party".I literally laughed my butt off,at that one."Holiday party" REALLY??????!!! This country has gotten so consumed with "political correctness",NOTHING is the same anymore.Nor,will it ever be again! Funny, how all these retail chains still love taking that "CHRISTMAS" money from everyone, though. Also, you never see the great CHRISTMAS movies on television anymore, either. They used to show "It's A Wonderful Life" numerous times in December. Now,they show it ONE time on Thanksgiving night. If they're so determined to take away CHRISTMAS from society,I think they should stop brainwashing people with "holiday" sales commercials EVERY single minute.I can't believe what this country's come to,it's truly truly sad and heartbreaking. To you 'people' on here who don't have a problem with the term "holiday",I feel extremely bad for you.You 'people' must be thoroughly miserable with your lives. What's next, changing the movie title to,"A Holiday Carol"? Or,"Twas The Night Before Holiday"? Or,"A Holiday Story" Or,"Holiday Vacation" LMFAO! CHRISTMAS always has been and ALWAYS will be,CHRISTMAS! The media have far too much control over every aspect of society. If they wanna label/brainwash/stereotype people,go right on ahead. But,it'll be a VERY cold day in hell, before THIS guy ever calls CHRISTMAS,"the holiday"! Merry CHRISTMAS to the decent folks,on here.To the others, merry holiday!!!

I honestly do NOT see what difference it makes what word someone uses to widh you happiness...for pete's sake accept whatever term people WANT to use at face value. America is NOT about Christmas...America was founded on freedom OF religion...any religion.....not everyone celebrates the traditional ways that your family does....and if you want to get deeply technical....the tradition of Christmas was established in the 4th century by Christians, before that, the winter tradition was known as Yule or Yuletide. So to everyone out there....celebrate the way you see fit and express yourself in whatever way you see fit...

I am not offended by people saying Merry Christmas. I am offended when people say it to me, just automatically assuming that I am Christian. It is, for example, quite like speaking Spanish to an Italian because they have dark features. It is a faux pas. Speaking of tolerance, understanding, and being accepting, not assuming people are a member of one religion kind of goes along with that. The US, while majority Christian, is still the most religiously diverse nation in the world. Additionally, 15%+ of Americans do not identify with any religion at all. Happy Holidays, while it is probably most often used to address Christmas and New Years, also provides me with the chance to avoid an awkward conversation, most often involving being called 'Scrooge' and treated as if I am some horrible person for not being a Christmas observing Christian(bigotry, I dont think people realize how hurtful and oppressive this simple common response really is.) The other option being playing along with it and staying in the closet, which is disturbing to even consider. Jekyll, The very act of assuming that someone observes Christmas, and being upset when they don't, is quite literally telling them what to believe. Considering the majority of Christmas observers, this also ultimately falls under the definition of oppression. Respecting your beliefs and traditions does not include accepting you forcing it onto us(assuming that someone observe Christmas falls under this.) But if we must, then you must respect our offense(displeasure towards your impropriety.) I imagine you'd change your tune if one month every year people wished you a Merry Ramadan, and kept asking what you were doing for Ramadan, and if you were going to Midnight Mosque. If all of your Ramadan shopping was done, and all you saw on tv and in the shops was Ramadan imagery.

Id also like to add that demanding/expecting people to say Merry Christmas to you, as opposed to Happy Holidays, falls under the definition of oppression in regards to culture. (tyranny of the majority)
