How to quit smoking for real?

I finally quit smoking! Who else quit smoking recently? How did you do it? Was it difficult for you?

  • I used the nicotine patch and then slowly weened myself off of the patch. I have been cigarette free for 1 week and 3 days. I have been patch free for 3 days. The first and second day off the patch were the roughest. I had two breakdowns where I cried and had to eat a piece of chocolate in order to calm down. I am now breakdown free! :) Yay! It took me three full days off the patch to get the nicotine out ofmysystem enough to not have a breakdown. I still have to battle the habit of smoking and I am doing this by keeping my hands busy with sunflower seeds and chewing on gum. The reason I quit was because I got bronchitis and was having extreme difficulties breathing. I like to breathe, so I decided to quit smoking so I wouldn't have to deal with breathing issues the rest of my life. I now have an inhaler and still have a bad cough and sinus issues. I am getting better, but my doctor said it will be slow going. What made you decide to quit smoking? How did you do it?

    I hope this site is still active. Anyway I only smoke about 5 cigs a day but I still want to quit. Does anyone recommend the gum?
