Is it worth buying an expensive GPS?

i need advice on buying a gps unit

• I have been looking for a gps unit for my father on father's day. I don't know anything about them, but I saw my friend's one day and I thought it was pretty cool so I need some suggestions on buying my own. I need it to be $300 or less. I dont care much for it to say the directions aloud, just as long as the screen directions and words are clear and big. My friend (who has a garmin) was able to type in, for example, old... and a list of options like, "old country buffet" or "old navy" would come up. I want something like that with updated points of interest. Also, I need one that is sure not to miss any exits on the highway. Some gps units will just say exit 30 when you really need exit 30B or something like that. I cannot have that. I was looking at the tomtom one or tom tom go. any suggestions will help!
