How do you get Google Maps on the iPod Touch?

Can ipod touch work as GPS?

  • Now that ipod touch has google maps added, could it be used as a GPS? I had been planning to buy a GPS, but I' ve also been lusting after an ipod touch. Could I follow my lust and get to where I'm driving without getting lost? I'd hate to buy these two items if one can fulfill both functions.

  • Answer:

Yes, you may use the iPod Touch (including the new 4G model) as a car GPS. The two best solutions are the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch ($79), and the Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone and iPod Touch (about $150). Both of these units have built-in GPS chips to provide GPS functionality to the Touch. They also have built-in speakers to amplify the spoken directions, audio line out, and other features. They also charge the Touch as you drive. Use these Touch GPS kits with their matching turn-by-turn navigation apps (both TomTom and Magellan offer) from the App Store. I almost never use my GPS since I got an iPhone. If I could only have one of them, I wouldn't have to think twice about choosing the iPhone (even if it was not my phone had nothing but the map feature). The best thing about it is that it always has a blue ball to show where I am. There's a little arrow at the bottom of the screen, and it I touch it, the map immediately jumps to where I am. Here's how I constantly use this map: I map out my route in the house before I leave and get familiar with it. As I drive, I can see the blue dot move along the route. If I have to search or anything, I pull over. If I get lost, I pull over, touch the arrow to map my location, use 2 fingers on the touch screen to zoom in or out or move around till I get my bearings and find out where I need to go. Also, I use it often to find what I need. I can search for "pizza" and it will drop pins on all the pizza places. I can enter a business name- even an obscure one, or I can enter "aluminum", or "fabric" or "greek food" or something like that. If I touch a pin, it will give me address, phone no, website link, driving directions, anything I need really. I love it. Disclaimers: I don't know if the Touch works the same, and I do live in a big city.
