What is the function of lower epidermis?
-
-
Answer:
The epidermis is made up of two main layers. The upper layer is called the stratum corneum and is comprised of dead epithelial (skin) cells. This layer provides protection to the body and makes the skin water-resistant. The lower layer is called stratum germinativum. Stratum germinativum is where new epithelial (skin) cells are made. This is on a continuous basis. The cells are made on this level due to its proximity to blood supply. This is because the cells on the stratum corneum are constantly being sloughed off on a daily basis.
