mechanical weathering is the breaking down of rocks without chemical change in the rocks. for example frost wedging is a type of mechanical weathering where water gets into cracks in rocks and then freezes and expands, breaking up the rock. chemical weathering changes the rock chemically. rust forming on iron is an example of chemical weathering.
