Should Bastille Day be celebrated in France?

Why is Bastille Day celebrated in France?

  • Answer:

In early July 1789, there was unrest in Paris following food riots (the same kind of unrest existed periodically throughout Europe) and the people of Paris were scared of a supposed attack from the King's foreign regiments. On the 14th of July, aided by members of the National Guards, the Parisians raided the arsenal of the Invalids, where they seized cannons, then went on to the Bastille, a fortress and prison where they thought they could find powder. A gunfight ensued and the Bastille was stormed. That day marks the official beginning of the French revolution and the 14th of July is the French national day.
