Kwanzaa, which translates roughly as first fruits, is not actually a Swahili word. According to The Official Kwanzaa Web Site (see Related Links), it is derived from matunda ya kwanza, a Swahili phrase that means the first fruits. The word, kwanzaa, takes the form of a blend of two Swahili words, Kwanza, which means first, and kuzaa, which means to give birth and is used of both animals and plants. "Kwanzaa" would have a similar meaning. The extra "a" on Kwanzaa was simply to avoid leaving out a child, when seven children volunteered to carry the six letters of "Kwanza."
