How do I Remove the D40 Focus Screen?

  The focus screen on the Nikon D40 digital Single-lens Reflex (dSLR) camera forms the focusing plane for you when manually focusing the camera. The screen folds up and away when the shutter release is depressed allowing light to reach the electronic sensor. Removing the screen will allow you to clean it or replace it with another focus screen. Removing camera lens Turn the camera power off using the power switch located on the top, right-hand side of the camera body. Remove any lens attached to the camera body to allow access to the inside of the camera through the camera mount opening. Take care to keep foreign material from falling into the camera body. Open the retaining clip Tilt the camera body up so that the lens mount opening is well illuminated and accessible. You will see the rectangular focus screen sitting at an angle, against the upper portion of the opening. Use a pair of heavy tweezers to gently lift the retaining clip that is holding the focus screen in place around the edge (the retaining clip is hinged and the bottom will lift up). The focus screen will move so take care that you do not twist or bend the mounting. Remove the focus screen Remove the focus screen by gently lifting and pulling it free of the screen housing. The retaining clip will remain open and must be closed (after a focus screen has been re-inserted) before using the camera. Blow out any foreign material such as dust or dirt that may have fallen into the camera body before returning the camera to use.
