You cannot simply hook up your BlackBerry to your computer without having the proper installation software. Install the Desktop Software right from the BlackBerry homepage under "Apps & Software." Keep in mind that if you have an older computer system, you may need to download an older Desktop Software System. Once installed, or if you already have it installed, continue to Step 2. Reset your phone and your computer. Power down your computer through the Start Menu, and remove your BlackBerry battery to perform a hard reset. Purchase a new BlackBerry USB cable. These cables can be purchased from your service provider, online, or stores like Target, Best Buy or Office Max and typically are priced under $30. Connect the new USB cable to your BlackBerry and into your computer. Try starting up the Desktop Software again; if you still cannot connect to your computer, continue to Step 6. Configure your USB cable to the BlackBerry Desktop Software. Open Desktop Software and select "Options > Connections Settings..." Click on the drop-down menu to the right of Connection, and select "USB" or "USB-PIN." Click "Detect" to connect your USB cable to the software. Should a warning dialog box open, simply click "OK." Click "OK" again in the Success dialog box. You should now be connected.
