Because its the day lord rama killed ravana and rescued his wife sita. Also, Durga Ji killed mahishasura on the same day. We celebrate it by burning a huge firecracker stuffed effigee (statue like thing) of ravana and by worshipping Durga Ji. Jai Shree Rama
