How do i get started in the commercial music business?

How did you get started in the music business?

  • Answer:

You get started by getting out there and doing it. The main thing is that you want to make connections. Getting anywhere in the industry requires you to know what you are doing (through experience) and know the right people. Also, a lot of what you should do will depend on what exactly you want to do within the music business. If you want to be a recording engineer and record bands at studios, then get your own little studio set up and start recording yourself, friends, and anyone else you can to start building your skills. If you want to manage artists, or book shows, find local artists and work with them. Start small, and work your way up. There are very few handouts in the music business, so take every opportunity you can to get started and grow your knowledge and contacts. There are a lot of schools out there that can teach you different areas of the music business. In my opinion a lot of these schools are scams, feeding off hopes and dreams of people. When you are done with school you leave to an internship. You can try to get that internship without paying a lot of money for school. The problem is that with no experience at all, you will be overshadowed by people that did go to school. This is why I suggest to get started as soon as possible working with anyone you can to learn the skills you need. As you build your skills you will have something to show those that may hire you. Good luck.
