The Eiffel tower was championed by Gustave Eiffel to help him demonstrate the possibilities of employing iron in building structures. The government wanted the tower to serve as a monumental entrance to the world fair held in 1889. Gustave Eiffel company won the contract and completed the building in time for the 1889 world fair. He also used the tower to house a meteorological observatory, and for telegraphic and radio broadcasting experiments. Since then the tower added radio and TV masts and served as a broadcasting point.
