Why was Congo square important to the birth of jazz?

Answer:
It was a place African slaves would congregate when they had off on Sundays from the early 18th century onward, continuing on as the French traded the Louisiana purchase to the US. Each Sunday for hundreds of years, they would celebrate their culture, setting up a market, dance, sing and play music here, and it is known that slave songs were influences for jazz in the 1900's. The place then became a hotspot for jazz music.
