  Get great bass in your car by adding a subwoofer box to your stereo system. The subwoofer or sub provides low frequency reproduction for your stereo system and performs best when mounted in a box that allows it to resonate properly. Building a box of the correct volume will help your sub produce the best balance of bass properly and help the bass fill the car, rather than sound thin or tinny as smaller speakers do. You can buy a pre-built enclosure for your sub but some applications have space constraints that require a custom built box. Difficulty: Moderate Things You'll Need Tape measure Pencil and paper 1/2-inch MDF Subwoofer/Sub Speaker wire Speaker terminal cup Screws Screwdriver Wood Glue Fabric glue Heavy-duty Velcro Instructions Measure the space in which you are going to mount the sub and make a note of the dimensions on a piece of paper. Measure the diameter and depth of the subwoofer. Add 2 inches to each of the directions to get the minimum size of your subwoofer enclosure. Calculate the internal volume by subtracting two times the width of the MDF from each dimension (1 inch if you're using the 1/2-inch MDF recommended) and multiply the length by the width by the height. Compare this volume with the recommended volume listed by the manufacturer in the documentation that came with the sub. Adjust the length, width and height of the sub box until you have a plan that fits the recommended specifications from the manufacturer as well as the space in which you would like to mount it. Cut the front, back, top, bottom and sides from the MDF using the dimensions you calculated in the previous step. Cut a second piece for the front so we can add a little more strength to the mounting point for the subwoofer itself. Draw the outline of the subwoofer onto both the front pieces. Drill a hole in the area that you are going to remove then put the jigsaw through the drilled hole and cut out the area. Remember to do this for both front pieces. Use the same method to cut a hole in the back piece for the terminal cup. Secure the terminal cup in the hole using the screws. Assemble the sub enclosure using the wood glue and the screws to connect the pieces together. Screw the larger sides into the smaller sides to make the box strongest. After assembling the box, caulk the inside with the silicon caulk. Connect the speaker wire to the terminal cup in the back of the speaker. Run the wires to the subwoofer, then secure the subwoofer with the screws. Run speaker wire from the amplifier to the mounting location of the speaker box. The route will be different depending on the vehicle and mounting locations but you can use the screwdriver to lift the edge of the carpet and plastic trim and slide the wire underneath. Glue the heavy-duty Velcro to the bottom of the speaker box with the wood glue and in a corresponding position on your mounting point using the fabric glue for carpet or the appropriate glue for any other surface. Connect the speaker wire from the amplifier to the terminal cup on the back of the sub box and place the sub box in position on the Velcro. Tips & Warnings Tip: Break the sub in by playing it at a low volume for the first 20 hours. Tip: Remove the sub by disconnecting the wires and pulling it off the Velcro. Warning: Don't drive hard until the glue has had time to drive otherwise the box may come loose.
