Keyless entry installation?

Keyless Entry Installation Instructions

  • Answer:

Much of the difficulty in installing a keyless entry system is finding patience. Installation requires only basic tools. You can install keyless entry systems in vehicles with or without automatic locks, although you must install lock actuators in cars without automatic locks, which costs a couple hundred dollars. Installing keyless entry systems on vehicles with automatic locks is less complicated, but requires finding the right wiring connections, which requires patience. Difficulty: Moderate Things You'll Need Test light 3/8 drill bit Screwdriver Wire cutter Box cutting blade Socket set Wiring diagram Main control module Four button remote transmitters Wire harness Momentary switch LED status indicator and bracket Instructions Read the wiring diagram before you start the installation. The diagram will help you determine proper wiring locations and the appropriate type of keyless entry system for your car. Remove the panels under the dashboard, steering column and kick panel to access the wires needed for installation of the keyless entry system. Cut away the black covering hiding the wires. The covering gets in the way of locating the wire harnesses needed to install the keyless entry system. Find the main wiring harness to the keyless entry system. Use the diagram to select the right wires for installation. There are extra channels on the remote of the starter. Cut those wires down 6 inches long. Put black electrical tape around the ends of the cut wires and tape them to the main harness. Tape the rest of the wires together with black electrical tape. Leave 4 inches exposed for installation. Search for the main power wire, the ignition wire, the starter wire, the horn wire and the parking light wires. Strip the vinyl covering of each of the wires about 1.5 inches. Do the same to the wires on the new keyless entry. Install the black wire for the ground to the frame of the vehicle. This will give the best installation connection for the keyless entry system. Determine which locking system the vehicle has. Modern Japanese and American vehicles have a negative keyless entry system, which needs no external relays. Attach the wires from the keyless system to the wires found under the dashboard, the steering column and the kick panel. Vehicles with positive or five-wire reverse systems require installation of two 30 amp relays to get power to the keyless entry system. Pinch the wiring together. This is the harness going into the "brain" of the keyless entry system. All wires are connected so all locks and parking lights should work. Test the keyless entry system. Locks should lock and unlock and parking lights should blink. If both works then installation of the LED in the dash is next. Drill a 3/8 inch hole into the dash using the same size drill bit. Repeat drilling for the Valet switch in another area of the dashboard on the driver's side. Most Valet switches go under the dashboard. Installation is competed when the switches are mounted. Tips & Warnings Tip: Mark the mounting place of the LED and the switches with colored paint tape. Tip: Remove the fuse for the dome light and plug in before testing the installation before switches are mounted. Warning: Do not use crimp or snap taps. Warning: Do not disconnect the battery to the vehicle. Warning: Do not leave vehicle lights on during the installation of the keyless entry system because the battery may go dead. Warning: Do not mount the switches until the keyless entry system is tested. Warning: Do not plug the harness into the "brain" of the keyless entry system until all wires are connected. Warning: Damage may occur to the vehicle if the wiring harness and the "brain" of the keyless system do not line up at time of connection.
