What is the difference between RSS and ATOM feeds?

Everywhere I go, I hear the terms 'RSS feed' and I see a lot of ATOM feeds on websites too. What is the difference between these two types of feeds?

They are both syndication formats, but they are different structures/formats. Essentially, one is like a Word doc, and the other is like an OpenOffice doc. Both are word processing documents, but each are different formats, and each have some different abilities.
