Why are there gargoyles on top of Notre-Dame de Paris?

-
Answer:
At the time when cathedrals were built, there was no downpipes to convey water from the roof. The purpose of gargoyles was to protect the masonry, by directing the water away from the walls. Putting numerous gargoyles also had the effect of sending down only limited amounts instead of a flow of rainwater. The fact of carving gargoyles has ornamental purposes.
