How to choose between computer science and information systems course at the university?

Looking for advice to choose between Computer Science & Information Systems Course in University

  • I am currently in my 1st year in Computer Science. There are various programs to choose from: http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/cs_cs_prospective.html - http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/cs_cs_focus.html http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/cs_cm_prospective.html Computational Biology Computer Engineering http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/is_is_prospective.html http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/is_ec_prospective.html *Courses I have expressed interest before are linked Originally I thought I'd go into Communications & Media as I felt things like 3D/Games will be interesting. Then after I saw some projects, I think it cannot make it. The games are far cry from whats currently out there Then I thought about pure Computer Science. But looking at the modules more closely, I think its very accademic. eg. I will need 4 Science & 4 Maths, Maths probably helps in logical thinking, but I question I will need such advanced maths in my work. Science will likely go wasted/forgotten ... Then I looked at Electronic Commerce and felt that that will be whats needed now in the industry, e commerce. Also I thought there will be more web development. But after hearing from a tutor that thats more for people that want to escape programming, mostly business. I re-considered ... Now I am thinking between Information Systems & Computer Science. What are your thoughts, is it beneficial to study part business part Comp Sci? Some says I will be a "jack of all trades, master of none". What are your advice?

I think the only person that would truely be able to answer this question is you. What type job do you want? What type of projects do you want to work on and what role do you wan to play in those projects? I'm an asp.net programming and I work in the education industry. Depending on the project, we have a wide variety of skill sets working together to figure out what the best solution would be. These people range from graphic designers, frontend and backend developers, database administrators, professors, security analysts, representatives from the marketing department...etc. Each with different levels of influence on various aspect of the project. Maybe you might see yourself as one of these, or maybe a few of them. That really depends on you. Also, I find each school instructs differently. I've seen CS programs that are very heavy on programming and some that are very heavy on hardware So thats another variable to consider. My advice would be to pick two or three roles you'd like to see yourself playing in a project and find out what qualifications it take for you to be in those positions. Don't try to learn it all... that hardly work out for most people.
