New York City sales tax rate increased. Effective August 1, 2009, L. 2009, c. 200, authorizes New York City to increase its sales and use tax from 4% to 4.5% and repeals the clothing tax exemption for clothing items priced over $110. The bill also amends the law to apply the full City sales tax on the transmission and distribution of electric and natural gas service, even when the electricity or natural gas service is purchased separately from the transmission and distribution service.
