How to separate 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz signal?

How do you configure WDS with 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands and an N network?

  • I have got two routers LINKSYS WRT610N IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab, IEEE 802.11a/b/g, IEEE802.11n Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router BUFFALO WZR-HP-G300NH 802.11b/g/n Nfiniti Wireless High Power Gigabit Router Both support Wireless-N. The Linksys is Dual Band and the Buffalo is not. What is the best way to set up this network so wireless N devices get the best speeds while still maintaining compatability for a/b/g devices? Do I need two SSIDs? (One for N and one for a/g/b, or should the SSIDs be unique for bands?)

  • Answer:

b/g/n are not compatible with a, they're completely different. It's not just a frequency difference. b/g/n devices are usually automatically backwards compatible, no special settings necessary, if using the 2007 spec in the 2.4GHz spectrum. N takes up half the 2.4GHz spectrum so you should only run both if one is on channel 3 and the other is on channel 11. If they are 2009 spec devices it may be easier to run one in 5Ghz (if either supports it, 5GHz 802.11n support is somewhat rare).
