Why do Montessori school graduates choose to study computer science?

  • In research for a forthcoming book I'm writing, I've discovered that Montessori School graduates are four times more likely to go on to Study Computer Science than kids from other schools. I also found they are three times more likely to study natural science. I wondered whether you may have some ideas or perhaps practical experience as to why this may be the case.

    Montessori school kids are probably demographically and socioeconomically very different from the general population.  Once you correct for that, does the effect persist?

Computer Science is a relatively young field.  It isn't about learning what has already been established, it is about toying around with hardware to create your own understanding.  Montessori schools are based around learning through experience, and since nearly every home has a computer that curiosity can easily be applied to CS.

I do not think the correlation is correctly depicted. I think Montessori kids love to learn. Studying is not a chore for Montessori kids. So, these kids end up going to college. Also, they are not subject to the stigma associated with maths and science in some other school kids. To Justin's point, the effect persists even after the socioeconomic and demographic correction.
