What do you think of contemporary art?

What do contemporary philosophers think of Hegel's philosophy of art? Is post-Romantic art (or rather, art that Hegel termed "Romantic") truly redundant? Does art have a purpose? If so, what is its purpose?

  • Answer:

I personally believe that art is a way to attain an unknown dose of that wow feeling that can be experienced. It is however short and hard to find. You get a shot of it when you see something trully mesmerizing, or when you walk into a giant cathedral, or create something that to you is ultimately harmonic with your soul. However the first time is never just quite experienced with the same intensity if looking or experiencing the same thing. So you continue to seek it or create it, waiting for that next piece to take your breath away. Hoping that it will be an equal or even larger dose of this unexplainable feeling, often referred to as esthetic emotion in many art journals and books.
