How would a product be considered organic?

Can Google+'s product managers be considered to be successful?

  • This can be a followup question of First of all, can Google+ be considered as success? I asked this, because I don't think it kills Facebook or Twitter, although it has a large number of users. But it is Google who produced it, right? Google itself can be the best advertisement platform for itself. I mean, any way, whatever it makes, the products can have "many users", although whether those products become like Google's core search service (truly have so many loyal users) remains as a question. I say Google+ doesn't kill Facebook or Twitter. And I don't believe many users left Facebook or Twitter because of Google+. So, can those product managers of Google+ be considered as successful? Will they be prompted further or get a huge bonus because of Google+? The ultimate question is How Google judge whether a product (manager) is successful or not?

  • Answer:

Depends on the KPIS they have to meet. If its (like many new products) sign ups then they are killing it. If its repeat visits they will probably not be too happy just yet, but Its not uncommon for those that found facebook too 'Open' to be using G+ on a reguler basis. Google has killed products soon after launch and G+ seems to be getting more and more promotion so I think overall the Product guys are doing a good job so far..

Every time I mention Google+ to my non-techie friends, all they say is "Why would I want to use that?". From how I see Google+ is well executed, but there is no real gravity towards the product from non-techie users. Coming to your next questions as to whether you can call the PMs successful. I guess it really depends on whether they meet the goals and expectations set by leadership at Google. But I am positive that the goals were not as ambitious as killing Facebook in 1st year of launch of Google+. If beating or matching Twitter and Facebook in engagement or number of users is the measure of success, then it's safe to assume that Google+ is a failure so far.

Here is an article posted by TechCrunch last month. The stance in the article is that Google+ can be considered a success. Feel free to read it and formulate your own opinion: http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/28/no-more-no-more-no-more-no-more/

IMO, G+ had two major flaws: (1) People without Google account were not allowed to create a profile and use it (at least, as long as I checked) (2) A highly engineering-driven user interface.  I was amazed not seeing Google improving the UI .
