Where is a cheap place to stay in Germany or France?
-
I will be traveling around Germany and France next May. I have stayed in hostels in Scandinavia before, they're quite expensive compared to elsewhere I've been. How much per night for a room in Germany or France?

Answer:
Tl:dr: Don't worry. It is much cheaper. According to http://Hostelworld.com a typical hostel in Berlin sets you back between 10 and 20⬠for a dorm room and 18-28⬠for privates on a weekend night. In Munich the prices are about 30% higher on average, but even there places offer dorms from as low as 12â¬. Every other German city that is big enough to have a few hostels will roughly fall in between these two examples. As for France, Paris defines the top of the price range and that is certainly expensive on a European scale. On a quick look there are a few places below 20⬠for dorm rooms, but a quick look at the reviews tells me that you will probably want to spend at least around 25⬠for an okay-ish experience. The cheapest privates are also available from that price. A city such as Nice will set you back less money, roughly about the same as Berlin. I have been to hostels in most European countries and Germany and France are still comparatively cheap, 10-20⬠is what I would expect about anywhere, even if you go far into Eastern Europe where living cost is much lower overall it does not get significantly cheaper on average. The Eastern European cities do lead the current backpacker index for Europe [1] with Sofia, Krakow, Bucharest but Berlin and even London are not far behind. The exception is indeed Scandinavia - it is not surprising to see Stockholm and Oslo at the very end of the list only topped by Zurich in expensiveness. Hostels are much cheaper in France and Germany. It will vary depending on the city you stay in. In my experience, staying in cities that have fewer hostels are going to be more expensive (I remember only finding hostels in Strasbourg, France more expensive than ones in Paris). I'd also recommend Couchsurfing, it's a great way to meet people, especially people who know the city well. If you're looking for something super social like that, http://WeHostels.com adds a social layer to staying in hostels. I like meeting new people along the way, some don't.

Youth Hostels in Germany are very cheap - especially when you consider the MASSIVE breakfast that is included in the price. Ex-East German ones are, on the whole, cheaper than average. Paris, Berlin and Frankfurt must be the most expensive ones.

Have you checked couchsurfing? My son (26) does it a lot around Europe and finds it very pleasant.
