How can a freshman from a 3rd tier college with decent technical skills become a research assistant at a research organization in India?

By decent, I mean better than most people his the college. I intend to pursue an MS in the near future and I am genuinely fascinated by the prospect of doing something useful rather than doing mindless,monotonous work in a service-based company which really doesn't require my engineering degree. What skills do research organizations require from freshers?

By research organisation, I take it that the question refers to CSIR, BARC and the like. One most of them prefer post graduates or Doctorates. It would be better for you get at least a PG degree from one of the IITs or IISc
